Straws To Save Our Oceans
Soft-drink consumers in the UK used around 4.4 billion plastic straws last year. We find that difficult to comprehend and can’t imagine how much plastic waste that creates. But, finally, authorities are doing something to limit the damage to our oceans.
The UK government has bought in legislation aimed at limiting the use of single-use plastics. From April 2020 there is a ban on plastic straws, plastic stirrers and plastic cotton buds.
Shops will not be allowed to sell plastic straws. But they will be on sale at registered pharmacies (in-store and online) as those with medical needs or disability may require them.
Our new alternative straws, as a promotional item, tick some important boxes of affordability, recurring use, visibility and eco-friendliness.
Food chains are trying to use paper-type straws but there are still issues with strength and recycling. It’s going to be much more convenient to carry a reusable straw, not least for hygiene reasons. We are all so much more aware of that now!
